Possible names being bandied about the party for that candidate include outgoing Gov. Olene Walker, former congresswoman Enid Greene, Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan, and Molonai Hola, who previously ran for Salt Lake City mayor.

Even a blank space on the ballot where a Republican candidate would normally be is better than the alternative, some party members say, contending that Workman is dragging down other GOP candidates.

At the party's Central Committee meeting Sept. 11, several members supported a possible resolution urging Workman to drop out, though the effort eventually failed. However, enough executive committee members (10) requested the special Oct. 5 meeting for Coleman to schedule it.

Coleman noted, however, that even if the party votes for Workman to step down, she is under no obligation to do so.

"It's Mayor Workman's decision," she said. "Even though we nominate our candidates, we don't have the power to un-nominate them."
