Many teachers moving on

• Utah schools lose about 11 percent of the teaching force each year — only 3 percent are retirees.

• Utah teachers quit rather than retire at a rate of 3 to 1.

• Utah colleges of education graduate 3,600 teachers per year. Only one in five recommended for licensure in the past five years is actually teaching in Utah.

• There are now 11,000 teachers in Utah with teaching licenses who are not teaching.

• Only one in three teachers licensed in Utah during the past five years is currently teaching.

• Nationwide, 44 percent of all new teachers leave the profession after six years.
