Below right, Captain Steve Crandall of the Salt Lake Fire Department escorts Dorothy Merriman and her dog from their apartment, which is adjacent to an apartment building that caught fire near the Brickyard Plaza shopping center, 3200 S. 1300 East. At left, crews from Salt Lake City and the countywide Unified Fire Authority battle the blaze. Dennis McKone, assistant battalion chief in the Salt Lake City Fire Department, said the firefighters quickly contained the two-alarm blaze, limiting it to a single unit of the complex. A 911 caller reported the fire at 2:42 p.m. An early estimate placed the damages at about $125,000. No one was injured. Firefighters were called to that same unit for a two-alarm fire about two years ago, McKone said. The cause of that fire was ruled accidental. The cause of Thursday's fire is still under investigation.
