Charley struck southwestern Florida in August; slow-moving Frances followed in early September, hitting Florida's east coast. Together they killed 50 people and caused an estimated $20 billion damage in Florida alone.

Ivan, targeting the Gulf Coast, is now a Category 4 hurricane but was a Category 5; it has already killed 37 in the Caribbean and caused massive destruction.

Next up? Tropical storm Jeanne, which may yet become a hurricane, has already hit Puerto Rico, killing 2.
