Salt Lake County District Attorney David Yocom's statement on the appointment of a special prosecutor in the case of Mayor Nancy Workman says:
"Due to extensive public statements made by Mayor Workman over the last three months, including the latest paid political ads claiming that the prosecution of this matter is being conducted for political reasons and that I personally am attempting to hijack the election process, I and my office must step aside and allow an attorney who has no connections with me or the district attorney's office to take over the case.
"I realize that the appointment of a special prosecutor will be an added burden on the taxpayers, but when the defendant in a criminal case alleges, as the mayor has alleged here, that I and my office have engaged in unprofessional conduct and that the investigation and prosecution of this case is being done for partisan political reasons, I have no choice but to take this action."
