A two-alarm fire at a vacant eight-plex in downtown Salt Lake City kept fire crews busy early Friday.

The fire at the Wayfarers Inn, 243 W. 200 South, was reported at 3:38 a.m. The first responding units found heavy fire throughout the second floor and immediately called for a second alarm, said Salt Lake City Fire Assistant Battalion Chief Dennis McKone.

It took crews a little less than an hour to bring the fire under control, he said. Damage to the boarded-up building was estimated Friday at $100,000.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Friday, McKone said. The apartment complex has been vacant for nearly a year, he said.

In fact, McKone said the apartment was boarded up shortly after the last time fire crews were called to the building in August 2003. In that incident, fire crews were called to assist Drug Enforcement Administration agents who found a large meth lab.

The alleged drugmakers had also put two video cameras at the entrance of the complex to monitor when police were coming.
