The dominance has led to some concerns about a monopoly that would stifle competition and result in expensive fares.

Tim Campbell, executive director of the Salt Lake City Department of Airports, said he believes there is enough competition — chiefly, 39 daily flights from low-fare carrier Southwest Airlines — to keep fares reasonable.

"We still have a good mix of carriers that will work to benefit the consumer here in Utah," he said.

Delta's dominance also means air travel advocates will continue to worry about the airline's financial health, which remains in question.

"It's a concern," Campbell said. "It's something we monitor very closely, and we certainly wish them the best."

Holbrook credited Campbell's management, which has kept landing fees and terminal rentals low, for helping to secure Delta's commitment to Salt Lake City.

And while Wednesday's announcement was good news, she shares some worry about Delta's financial future.

"This is a very volatile time for the airlines and for Delta especially, but we're optimistic."
