The president received several rounds of applause during his roughly 25-minute Nashville speech, but one of the loudest was when he went on the offensive against Kerry.

Bush criticized him for being one of 12 senators who opposed an $87 billion supplemental funding package last September that included funding for body armor, hazard pay and other equipment for troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"When further pressed, he said he was proud of his vote, and then he said it was a complicated matter," Bush said. "There's nothing complicated about supporting our troops in combat."

Bush also went after Kerry for what the president said was his reversal on troop re-deployment policy.

Bush said Kerry on Aug. 1 endorsed a plan for troop re-deployment around the globe to help adjust to the war on terrorism. When Bush announced a similar plan 17 days later, the president said, Kerry criticized it and said the administration "has very little imagination."

"Well, it takes a lot of imagination to come out against a position you took 17 days earlier," Bush said, drawing laughter from the legionnaires.
