Shooting of woman leads to charges

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged two Salt Lake County men in 3rd District Court after a shooting that left a woman with a bullet wound in her thigh.

On Aug. 13, four women travelling in a car together were angry about the cheating of one woman's boyfriend, according to charges. There was a series of phone calls between the women and a 19-year-old man.

The man found them, followed them and threatened to kill one or all of them, the charges state. The woman eventually managed to get away from the man.

Two of the women were dropped off and the remaining two women decided to go to an apartment in Murray, charges state. But the man was waiting there, ran after them and shouted.

The women tried to drive away when another man, 24, emerged from hiding with a handgun. Shots were fired and the car was hit with two bullets. A bullet struck one of the women in the thigh from behind. The tire of another vehicle, which was not involved, was destroyed by a bullet. Police found a .40-caliber Glock handgun nearby, the charges state.

The men were charged with two first-degree felony counts of attempted aggravated murder. But prosecutors offer a judge or jury alternative charges — aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, and aggravated assault, a third-degree felony. The 24-year-old additionally was charged with use of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.
