Beauty ride

BYU ended Wednesday's morning practice outdoors with the traditional water slide. During this activity, staged on a giant sheet of plastic drenched by a fire hose, linebacker Dan Bates caught an elbow in the mouth, knocking out one of his front teeth.

Redshirts

Decisions will be made on possible redshirts today as BYU installs preparation for the opener against Notre Dame. Head coach Gary Crowton said sophomore OL Ofa Mohetau will redshirt "and he's OK with that." Other candidates include linebacker K.C. Bills, who has a shoulder injury; and WRs Mike Morris (foot injury), Michael Reed and Joe Griffith. A two-deep roster should be finalized today as the Cougars create a prep team to act as Notre Dame.

Linebacker depth

Sophomore middle linebacker Cameron Jensen will be backed by freshman Billy Turner (5-foot-11, 215 pounds, Daly City, Calif.) and walk-on Markell Staffieri (6-3, 240, Torrey Pines, Calif.). A third player, walk-on Matt Bauman (6-2, 220) out of Skyline High School, has impressed defensive coordinator Bronco Mendenhall with his aggressiveness.

Shifting secondary

With Tuesday's report Bills may redshirt to rehab a shoulder, Mendenhall solidified Spencer White to that safety spot and switched Dustin Gabriel behind him. Freshman safety David Tafuna has been moved from one safety position to back starter Aaron Francisco with freshman Ibrahim Rashada. A more accurate depth chart will be finalized on Thursday as Mendenhall and Crowton finish evaluations from two-a-day drills.
