The days of getting beat 10-0 are over for the Timpanogos High girls soccer team.
This year, the Timberwolves are the ones beating teams by large margins.
The success started last year when Timpanogos won its first Region 7 title and advanced to the state tournament for the first time. Now the T-Wolves are out to show that last year was no fluke. Since second-year coach Natalyn Lewis lost only one player from last season's squad, Timpanogos looks to be on the right track to repeat last year's success.
"The expectations are a lot different for the team this year," Lewis said. "There is a very different attitude this year. Last year, there was a lot of skepticism, and expectations were not high. This year, the girls came into practice confident, excited and enthusiastic. The best word to describe them is enthusiastic. They are excited to be out there and enthusiastic about the game."
Lewis expects big things from a variety of players this year. The two seniors Lewis will count on heavily, however, are goalie Sutton Cherrington and forward Shantae Adams.
"They are both ready to have solid senior years," Lewis said.
Along with Cherrington, Lewis said her anchors defensively are Shayla Adams and Megan Richardson.
With a strong nucleus of players, Timpanogos looks to be the team to beat in Region 7.
And coaches around the valley not only feel Timpanogos is the team to beat in Region 7 but the best team in Utah County.
"Hands down they are the best team," Pleasant Grove coach Erik Bayles said. "They are phenomenal. They are so good. It'll be hard to find a team where Timpanogos is at right now."
Giving Timpanogos a run for the title will be Mountain View. The Bruins are consistently strong, and with striker Erin Salmon returning, Mountain View will be right in the mix of things come state tournament time.
Like last year, Lone Peak and Orem will be in a dogfight for the third and final playoff spot in Region 7. Lone Peak may be the favorite to earn that final playoff berth this year since the Knights boast a solid group of girls with varsity experience.
The race for the Region 6 title looks to be up for grabs between Timpview, Provo and Springville. Timpview and Springville are going to miss all-state performers Jessica Harmon and Jamie Hatfield for most, if not all, the year, due to ACL injuries during the club season.
