Searchers and cadaver dogs will be getting a few days rest before resuming their probe for the body of Lori Hacking at the Salt Lake Valley landfill.
Investigators wrapped up three consecutive nights of searching early Monday morning. They have now searched the landfill more than a dozen times and have sorted through nearly two-thirds of the 3,000 tons of trash where they believe her body and the murder weapon, a .22-caliber rifle, are buried.
Salt Lake City police detective Dwayne Baird said searchers had still not found anything in the garbage relevant to the case.
The 27-year-old Hacking was allegedly shot and killed by her husband, Mark Hacking, as she slept early on the morning of July 19. Mark Hacking, 28, then allegedly put her body in a Dumpster near the University of Utah and the rifle in a second Dumpster. His brothers said he later confessed the crime to them.
Hacking remained in the Salt Lake County Jail Monday on $1 million bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 28.
Searchers plan to return to the landfill Thursday.
