Doping update

Greek weightlifter Leonidas Sampanis was stripped of his bronze and expelled from the Olympics for a doping offense . . . Russian shot put gold medalist Irina Korzhanenko, the winner at Ancient Olympia, is under investigation after testing positive twice for the steroid stanozolol — the same drug that cost Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson his 100-meter gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Utah connection

Former BYU athlete Megan Dirkmaat helped the U.S. women's eight capture the silver medal in rowing, 2 seconds behind Romania.

Salt Laker Logan Tom had 19 of U.S. volleyball's 75 points in a surprisingly easy 3-set win over Cuba. Tom also had a block and 2 digs.

BYU track coach Leonard Myles-Mills of Ghana missed making the 100-meter finals by a tenth of a second. He ran a 10.22.

Former Buzz player Ryan Radmanovich was 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored as Canada's baseball team routed Australia 11-0.

Ex-Stinger Clay Bellinger was 1-for-3 with 2 walks and a strikeout, but the Greece baseball team fell to Japan, 6-1.

Former Utah Starzz player Elena Baranova scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as the Russian women's basketball team defeated Nigeria 93-58.

Michaela Pavlickova had 4 points and 2 boards in the Czechs' 74-57 win over New Zealand in women's basketball.

Elisa Aguilar, who played briefly for the Utah Starzz, played 10 minutes but did not score in Spain's 64-61 win over the Korean women.

Weather

It was another steamy day in Athens, with the mercury reaching 99 degrees at the Olympic stadium under mostly clear skies. Monday was expected to be a little cooler — 89 degrees and clear.
