I am writing to respond to your Aug. 17 article portraying vending machines as the cause of childhood obesity. As parents of schoolchildren, we, too are concerned about the health of our nation's youths. Suggesting that vending machines are the cause of what is in fact a complex problem is ridiculous and takes attention away from discussions about how to solve this very serious problem of such concern to us all.
The truth is that reversing rising obesity rates requires better education about nutrition, making wise food choices, increasing physical activity and involved parenting. Let's invest our resources to educate our children about health and nutrition, and ensure they participate in daily physical fitness programs.
Our children must understand the importance of a healthy diet and choosing healthy foods. We are proud to offer a wide variety of healthy choices for students, ranging from granola bars and yogurt to milk and fruit juices in vending machines across Utah. Let's focus on the real solution, working together to educate our children about making those healthy choices and staying physically active.
