Scrimmage today

The Utes have a situational scrimmage planned for this morning at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

"We're still in the evaluation phase," said Utah coach Urban Meyer. " There's still a handful of young guys that we don't know what they can do. So it's going to be critical for the young guys to play.

Meyer said the coaching staff will use the scrimmage to finalize its depth chart—seeking "a pair and a spare" at each position.

According to the two-deep chart released Monday, several offensive positions are still being contested.

Jesse Boone and Andrew Johnson are battling for the starting center job, while Eric Pettit and Steve Dahl are both listed as No. 1 at left guard.

Another position to watch is quarterback, where Adam Madsen, Fano Tagovailoa and Brian Johnson are in a tight competition to become Alex Smith's back-up.

On Wednesday, Meyer said the Utes will begin focusing on their Sept. 2 opener against Texas A&M.

Today's scrimmage is closed to the public.

Liti injured

Sophomore tailback Mike Liti injured his right shoulder in a contact drill Monday morning. Utah's projected starter, who broke his left collarbone last season, insists he'll be back in a couple of days.

"It's just a little ding. It's fine," said Liti. "I'll be all right."

The extent of his injury was not immediately known, nor was the condition of freshman wide receiver John Peel. He injured his left leg in the afternoon session and had it placed in a brace when it began to swell.

Moving up

Special teams standout Grady Marshall, a junior, is moving up the depth chart on defense. The former walk-on, who earned a scholarship this fall, is now listed as Spencer Toone's back-up at rover linebacker.

Indoor facility

University of Utah officials will announce the name of the Utes' new indoor practice facility at a press conference today. The complex on Guardsman Way is expected to be complete by mid-November.
