ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Let the Games resume. The big happenings at the 2004 Summer Games for Monday:

SHOWDOWN: Potential vs. performance as U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, the big story of the Athens Games, goes head to head with Ian Thorpe, the big story of the Sydney Games.

LADIES FIRST: The U.S. softball team plays Japan in a rematch of the 2000 gold medal game, while the American women's basketball team takes on the Czech Republic.

TO THE MAT-TRESSES: The U.S. men's gymnastics team, led by reigning world all-around champion Paul Hamm, pursues its first team medal since 1984.

PRIME TIME: Swimming and gymnastics, augmented by the U.S. women's volleyball team against Germany and the gold medal round in women's synchronized platform diving.
