Davis Fair is family-oriented and free
Event starts Wednesday in Farmington
Like past Davis County Fairs, this year's is geared toward families with lots of free entertainment, a free family movie, magicians, free pony rides, hands-on science demonstrations for the kids, a Beatles tribute group for the adults and the usual animal exhibits.
The fair runs Aug. 18-21 at the Davis County FairPark, 151 S. 1100 West, Farmington. Admission and parking are free, which sets the fair apart from most county fairs, said fair coordinator Curtis Koch. "Our goal is to provide free family fun. Every night we'll have local and regional talent performing," he said.
A PRCA rodeo will be at the nearby Legacy Center Indoor Arena Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. each night. A Junior Rodeo will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the arena.
Wednesday's opening day will feature many activities from senior bingo to free pony rides, a carnival, watermelon-eating contest, petting zoo, local singer Peter Breinholt on the concert stage at 7 p.m. and the Les Schwab Demolition Derby at 7 p.m. in the arena.
Highlights on Thursday include a magician at 11 a.m. on the Main Stage, free rock climbing at noon, a pie-eating contest at 2 p.m., a world champion yo-yo artist at 3 p.m., pet show at 4 p.m., all you can eat ice cream event at 6 p.m., barrel racing at 6:30 p.m., Imagine — Remembering the Fab Four at 7 p.m., and the free family movie, "Finding Nemo," at 9 p.m.
During all four days of the fair, in the Utah State University Junior Engineering Discovery tent, a model of the Panama Canal built by USU will be on display. Kids will be able to move remote-controlled ships through the model's locks by raising and lowering water levels.
Highlights on Friday include a junior dairy show at 11 a.m., baby show at noon, a presentation at 2 p.m. on the Main Stage by the Eccles Dinosaur Park, and The Unknown Hypnotist at 6 and 8:30 p.m. on the Main Stage.
Saturday is a full day starting at 8 a.m. with a horse show, a Dutch oven cook-off beginning at 9:30 a.m., and entertainment events throughout the day. The fair closes at 11 p.m.
