PATRAS, Greece — In its first Olympic competition since its country was shattered by war, Iraq upset Portugal 4-2 in a gritty, come-from-behind victory as about 200 chanting fans cheered and jumped wildly. Portugal went ahead in the 12th minute when Iraqi defender Habar Haidar accidentally kicked the ball into his own net as he tried to clear a pass by Cristiano Ronaldo. Three minutes later, however, Mohammed Emad tied it after picking up a rebound from the goalkeeper, Moreira.

Iraq went ahead 2-1 in the 28th minute when Mohammed Hawar scored on a soft shot after dribbling past the goalkeeper, but Portugal tied it with a minute to go in the first half on a goal by Bosingwa.

With the game tied at 2-2, Mahmoud Younis put Iraq ahead 3-2 in the 50th minute, and Sadit Salih scored during injury time to seal the victory.

Iraq leads Group D with three points, while Costa Rica and Morocco have one after playing to a scoreless tie.

In other men's soccer games Thursday:

GHANA 2, ITALY 2: At Volos, Greece, Alberto Gilardino scored with six minutes remaining to help heavily favored Italy salvage a tie with Ghana.

The Italians trailed 2-0 after first-half goals by Emmanuel Pappoe and Stephen Appiah, but Giampiero Pinzi scored three minutes into the second half and Gilardino equalized.

PARAGUAY 4, JAPAN 3: At Thessaloniki, Greece, Jose Cardozo scored two first-half goals, and Pablo Gimenez had a goal and an assist to lead Paraguay to a victory over Japan.

Cardozo deflected Edgar Barreto's free kick into the net in the 25th minute, then converted Gimenez's short cross in the 37th.

Gimenez opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Shinji Ono scored twice for Japan on penalty kicks in the 22nd and 53rd minutes.

Ono's second goal cut Paraguay's 3-1 halftime lead to 3-2, but Aureliano Torres restored the two-goal advantage in the 62nd minute.

Japan moved within one goal again in the 81st minute when Yoshito Okubo scored off an assist from substitute Tatsuya Tanaka.

COSTA RICA 0, MOROCCO 0: At Heraklio, Greece, Costa Rica and Morocco played to a scoreless tie.

Morocco was forced to play a man short after Jamal Alioui received a red card in the 59th minute.

ARCHERY— South Korean archers broke three world records Thursday in men's and women's events in the ranking rounds of the Olympic competition.

Park Sung-hyun set a record of 682 points in the 72-arrow women's competition, breaking the mark of 679 set in May by Italian Natalia Valeeva.
