Loser: It's doubtful that visitors hundreds of years from now would place any value on the love note someone scrawled to a mysterious "Wendy" on the Buckhorn Pictograph Panel in the San Rafael Swell late last month. Compare it to the 2,000- to 4,000-year-old rock art the note defaced and there is no contest. One is a priceless remnant from a long-lost culture a rare window into an early chapter in the state's history. The other is the sophomoric scribbling of a thoughtless and juvenile bore.
Our hope is that experts can remove the graffiti, and that Wendy's suitor can be found and made to pay the cost.
Winner: Who says Utah isn't a hoppin' place? This week's efforts to reintroduce Columbian spotted frogs into the state is something worth, uh, croaking about.
A private-public partnership led to the frogs being returned at the Swaner Nature Preserve near Park City. The frogs used to hop freely in Utah, but experts say the humans moved in and much of the land the frogs lived on dried up. Indeed, it's not easy being green. This time we hope the critters will stay for good.
Loser: Maybe it's just the season for vandalism. If people aren't scrawling names on priceless treasures, they're shooting out car windows in Pleasant Grove. More than 50 car windows in that town were shot out in the wee hours last Wednesday, all along a well-traveled route through the city.
Whatever joy one derives from watching car windows break, it ought to pale next to another emotion relief at discovering no one happened to be sitting in their car when the pellets hit.
