The Bureau of Land Management is recognizing past and present Emery County commissioners' wise stewardship of public lands.
Associate BLM director Fran Cherry will present the Four C's national award for excellence in collaborative public land stewardship to commissioners on Friday at a ceremony at the Emery County Fair.
Cherry said the BLM's Four C's philosophy is the belief that successful conservation should involve the people who live on and love the land.
The commissioners established a Public Land Council citizen advisory committee and act as a formal cooperative agency in the Price Field Office's land-use plan, Cherry said. Local officials also hired a deputy sheriff to patrol the San Rafael Swell, swell, using a combination of Emery County and BLM funds, she said.
"Increasing law enforcement presence in the desert to better protect natural resources and serve the public through enhanced service and safety is something we have wanted to accomplish for a long time," Cherry said. "With the county's help that is happening."
