Judicial review: A judge has 48 hours to review the probable cause statement, a document that lists reasons police have to suspect Mark Hacking of aggravated murder.

Charges: The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office files official charges. To keep him in the Salt Lake County jail, prosecutors must file charges within 72 hours of his arrest.

Initial appearance: Hacking makes his first court appearance and will be officially informed of the charges against him. A judge will read Hacking his rights and set bail.

Preliminary hearing: A judge decides if prosecutors have enough evidence to advance the case to trial. Hacking could choose to waive this hearing.

Arraignment: Hacking officially enters a plea to the charges.

Trial: If no plea agreement is reached, the case would go to trial after what could be a lengthy process of pretrial motions and conferences.
