Emily Jameson wins 10K, just like husband
Course perfectly suits style of former Cougar
So it was no big surprise that the three-time all-American out of BYU defended her women's title on a pleasant but windy Saturday morning romp through Salt Lake City. Jameson not only won the individual honors but helped her team representing Salt Lake City win the first-ever women's team race as well.
"My form goes well with this course," she said after finishing in a time of 31:50. "The course was slightly different than a year ago, but I really couldn't tell. My time was a little faster than last year, but I've also been running a bit more this summer."
In fact Jameson, along with her husband, Teren, who won the men's 10K, has been running in a number of local races held in conjunction with community celebrations this year.
She finished well over a minute ahead of second-place Kara Ormond, the former Orem High star who came in at 32:57. Michelle Simonaitis of Draper was third at 33:27.
"This is always a good race, especially being early in the morning," she said. "The temperatures are usually pretty nice, and the wind out here today actually was behind me until we reached the final straightaway."
Last year, she took home more prize money from the race than her husband, who also placed in the top five in the men's race.
"I teased him a little bit, but he's the breadwinner, and we're just happy to be working together on saving some money so he can finish his master's thesis," she said.
On Saturday, they were equal breadwinners, both earning $500 for individual wins and $750 for their shares of the first-place team prize money.
Jameson said she wants to continue increasing her mileage this summer as she works to recover from a muscle pull in one of her calves.
"I'm planning on adding a few more local races the remainder of the year, then see how my leg feels," she said.
Susan Nielsen of Salt Lake City was fourth at 33:46, and Rebecca Walters of Salt Lake took fifth at 34:06.
