Leaders remember a 'remarkable man'
Elder Cecil O. Samuelson, president of Brigham Young University: "Elder Neal A. Maxwell was a remarkable man of deep insight, meekness and extraordinary spiritual strength. We at Brigham Young University are saddened to learn of this masterful teacher's passing and express our deepest condolences to his family. On a personal note, I regard Elder Maxwell as a close and special mentor and hold him in the highest esteem. He will be missed."
Lorris Betz, interim president, University of Utah: "The University of Utah community is saddened at the passing of Elder Neal A. Maxwell. In addition to his many contributions to his church and to our state and nation, Elder Maxwell worked as an administrator at the U. for nearly two decades and was instrumental in its growth and development. The university feels fortunate to have benefited from his leadership and joins with the countless others who mourn his passing."
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah: "Elder Neal A. Maxwell was a great personal friend and was one of the most kind and gentle people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was a true Christian who believed in hands-on service. He spent many hours visiting people who were sick or in need of a helping hand. He had a keen intellect, which he shared with thousands around the world through his inspiring, spiritual words and compassionate service. I believe his profound sermons and thoughtful teachings will inspire and touch the lives of people for generations to come. Elaine and I are praying for the Maxwell family at this time that they will find peace and comfort from the life that he lived and the example he leaves to all of us."
Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah: "I was saddened to hear of the death of Elder Maxwell. I knew him as a person strongly committed to public service and to education. Elder Maxwell's many personal accomplishments and his distinguished record of service to Utahns are part of a legacy that enriches all of us. I offer my deepest sympathies to his wife, Colleen, and to his family."
Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah: "We mourn the passing of Elder Maxwell. Rarely does a religious leader live what he preaches to the exact degree Elder Maxwell did. His life was a living, breathing sermon with his eloquence exceeded only by his example. His loss will be felt by all of us, particularly those whose spirits he touched and who live better lives because of him."
