Carlos Arroyo, the Jazz's newly re-signed starting point guard and the starter at the point for Puerto Rico's 2004 Olympic Team, had to undergo an MRI exam after experiencing back spasms during a pre-Olympic warmup game.
But the MRI proved negative, and Arroyo is expected to miss only a day or two, Jazz basketball operations senior vice president Kevin O'Connor said Thursday night.
"I talked to him, so did (Jazz trainer) Gary (Briggs), and there are no concerns," O'Connor said.
Still, the incident was something of a scare especially after the Jazz just signed Arroyo to a four-year, $16 million deal.
"You're concerned anytime you get a guy that has anything that's a problem when he's your property and you've just signed him to a four-year contract," O'Connor said. "But I also think you have to understand that's part of the game."
SIGN HERE: The Jazz will re-sign restricted free agent big man Jarron Collins today, leaving a deal with restricted free agent guard Mo Williams the last significant roster move Utah must address.
There may be interest in Williams from elsewhere, but O'Connor said he planned to speak with Williams' agent today.
By the end of the next week, the Jazz should also know for certain that the Detroit Pistons are not matching their six-year, $50 million offer to center Mehmet Okur and that the Cleveland Cavaliers are not matching their six-year, $68 million offer to power forward Carlos Boozer.
With Rasheed Wallace signing a five-year deal with Detroit reportedly worth $57 million, word from the Pistons regarding the decision not to match on Okur could come sooner rather than later.
The Jazz plan to go into training camp with 13 players under contract, but there is a possibility another could be added for the season. Possibilities for the 14th spot include big men Mikki Moore and Ben Handlogten, both of whom will be invited to training camp, O'Connor said.
MEHMET SPEAKS: Utah-bound Okur has made his first public comments since signing the Jazz's offer sheet and Jazz coach Jerry Sloan might not like what he said.
"I put on weight because of the wedding preparations and the holiday," Okur, who recently married Turkish model Yeliz Caliskan, told the Zaman newspaper in his native Turkey, the Detroit Free Press reported.
