Utah Congressman Jim Matheson will speak Sunday about the impacts of past nuclear weapons testing before a public screening of the film "On the Beach."
The event, open to the public, is at 7 p.m. at the Broadway Centre Cinemas, 111 E. Broadway. It is sponsored by Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah (HEAL Utah) and Downwinders Opposed to Nuclear Testing (DONT).
Second District Rep. Matheson, D-Utah, is the son of the late Utah Gov. Scott Matheson, who died of cancer thought to be caused by fallout from above-ground nuclear tests that billowed over southern Utah. The congressman will talk about his legislation, the Safety for Americans from Nuclear Weapons Act, intended to ensure the safety of Americans if and when nuclear weapons testing resumes at the Nevada Test Site.
HEAL Utah and DONT will conduct a discussion following the film.
