Teacher may be freed until sex trial

Despite finding he posed a risk to the community, a federal magistrate on Monday ruled that a Brighton High School teacher accused of soliciting sex online could be released pending trial.

U.S. Magistrate David Nuffer imposed strict restrictions on the pretrial release — no contact with children under age 18, aside from his own children; no Internet access; completion of a mental-health evaluation — and stayed the order until Thursday to allow prosecutors time to ask a district judge to review the decision.

Scott Guymon Revill is charged with one count of coercion and enticement for illegal sexual activity for allegedly arranging a sexual meeting with an FBI agent posing as a 13-year-old girl.

Revill, 46, is a computer lab teacher and golf coach at Brighton. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case.

Nuffer said Revill has a "demonstrably clear record" of service to the community and his family, many of whom filled Nuffer's Salt Lake courtroom Monday morning. Defense attorney Todd Gardner urged Nuffer to consider those family members, including Revill's wife of 19 years and two teenage children, when making his decision.

"It's absolutely imperative that we don't make more victims in this case," Gardner said.

According to court documents, Revill engaged in several sexually explicit Internet conversations with the agent in May and June. He was arrested June 22 when he arrived at Orem Junior High School for a prearranged meeting with the agent, who he allegedly still believed to be a young girl.

Revill will be back in federal court Thursday for an arraignment. Nuffer's release order will not go into effect until after that hearing.

The charge against Revill carries a five-year minimum mandatory sentence and a maximum of 30 years behind bars.
