A surveyor, the councilman also worked as an emergency medical technician with the city's volunteer ambulance crew for about 15 years but is on leave because of his council position. As a councilman, Daley also oversees public works, the city band, the Peteetneet Academy, a local museum and community center.

"Everybody down here cares deeply for Brad," Hall said. "We support both of them."

Because the allegations involve potential misdemeanors, it's unlikely the City Council would ask for Daley's resignation, he said. If he were to be charged with a felony, then the council could make that request, Hall said.

Mayor Bernell Evans said he, too, was surprised by the incident. Evans said he saw Daley at a credit union ribbon cutting on Thursday, but didn't think it was an appropriate setting to ask him about his plans.

"I would never have suspected anything like this from Brad," City Councilman Larry Skinner said. "I would be surprised if it comes up in public (in a City Council meeting) nor would it be appropriate."
