John Swallow's clever tactic will pay dividends to Republicans deep into the election season.

• The primary in the 3rd Congressional District is heating up as a result of media activities funded by the Coalition to Protect the American Worker. This right-wing group has subjected radio listeners to a barrage of commercials blaming illegal immigrants for Utah's woes: overcrowded classrooms, water shortages, a mediocre Jazz season, etc. Fortunately, federal law prohibits further electronic advertisements, but last-minute attacks in print are expected.

Republican LaVarr Webb was policy deputy to Gov. Mike Leavitt and Deseret News managing editor. He now is a political consultant and lobbyist. E-mail: lwebb@exoro.com. Democrat Frank Pignanelli is a Salt Lake attorney, lobbyist and political adviser. A recent candidate for Salt Lake mayor, Pignanelli served 10 years in the Utah House of Representatives, six years as House minority leader. E-mail: frankp@xmission.com.
