The questions raised about McCartney's use of a state vehicle to travel to the Capitol comes at the same time another lawmaker, Rep. Greg Curtis, R-Sandy, is being criticized for "double-dipping," taking the legislative reimbursement while driving a vehicle supplied by his employer, Salt Lake County.

The House speaker said other than changing the legislative mileage form to make it clear the reimbursement only applies to private vehicles, he's not sure what can be done to better control mileage taken by the part-time representatives and senators.

"I don't know what we would audit," Stephens said, to check up on lawmakers.

"There are only about six or eight people (in the Legislature) who the recent incidents could apply to," said Stephens, R-Farr West. "By far, most of us drive our private cars to the Capitol. And it is up to individuals to be responsible.

"There is no way we can know if someone is getting a car allowance or mileage from their private firms" — and so could be accused of "double-dipping" if they also took the legally allowed mileage that legislators get for driving to and from Capitol meetings.
