Bountiful teacher jailed due to threats
Sandra Wariner, 57, first threatened colleagues in the teachers lounge before school and later made a specific threat upon school Principal Steve Lindsay, Bountiful Police Lt. Steve Gray said.
"Basically she said, 'If I don't get the assignments that I want, I have a gun, it's loaded and I will bring it to school,' " Davis District spokesman Chris Williams said Thursday.
Wariner had reportedly been making similar more general threats over the past eight or nine months, according to information collected by the police officer who works at the school.
"She told several teachers she had a pistol at home and had talked about shooting herself at times," said Gray. "This is the first time it was directed toward the school."
The incident is the third time in eight days that threats of violence have been uttered or uncovered inside a Utah school.
The material also contained the names of specific victims and had neo-Nazi overtones, according to Summit County authorities. All three boys have been suspended and were booked into juvenile detention facilities.
"You sort of expect kids, who are not very mature to say things, but you don't expect it from an adult it's totally something unexpected," said Gray. "You have to assume to in this day and age, and with everybody knowing what has been happening over the few years that when somebody opens their mouth and makes a statement like that you have to take it seriously,"
Wariner was booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of making a terroristic threat, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Bond is set at $10,000.
Formal charges are expected to be filed today, a Davis County prosecutor's office spokeswoman said.
Police reportedly recovered a shotgun and a handgun from the woman's home Thursday afternoon.
Wariner has worked in Davis District on and off since 1974 and continuously since 1983. She has taught at Bountiful Junior High for about 10 years. District officials have suspended the woman with pay pending further investigation and it is too early in the investigation to say if she will stay employed with the district.
