Brigham man wins bodybuilding crown

Richard Martin of Brigham City proved his doctor wrong Saturday when he was crowned Mr. United States Amateur Junior Masters Champion at the Mr. Universe and Mr. United States bodybuilding competition in Las Vegas.

Several years ago, after breaking his arm playing football, Martin said his doctor told him he would never be a competitive bodybuilder. But according to Martin, he was motivated to prove otherwise.

Martin's title was in the 35-and-older division. He said he also placed second in the Mr. United States Open Class and third in the Pro Mr. Universe category, which qualified him for the U.S. natural bodybuilding team.

Martin, 38, said he has been bodybuilding most of his life but has been on the competitive circuit for only a year. Larry Scott, a former Mr. Olympiad, is his coach.
