Regarding the abuse of prisoners, I was shocked to read the letter from Bruce T. Forbes (Readers' Forum, May 4) and to realize he was an adult. I felt as if I were reading something one of my sixth-graders would say when having to face the consequence of a misdeed: "He did it to me first" and "He started it."
Two wrongs have never made a right. Any atrocity toward another fellow human being should be viewed with abhorrence. Those who have been recipients of cruel acts should be all the more sensitive to the pain and hurt such acts create. I will no longer wonder why it is difficult to teach kindness, charity, forgiveness and love to children. If we continue to model hate and revenge, that will be exactly what we reap. And the consequences are greater than we can imagine.
