EARLY ENTRIES: High school standouts Al Jefferson and J.R. Smith announced Monday they will enter the NBA draft but won't hire an agent.

The star of the Arkansas Razorbacks' recruiting class, the 6-foot-9 Jefferson averaged 42.6 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks during his senior season at Prentiss High School.

McDonald's, Parade and USA Today selected Jefferson to their All-America teams, and he signed a national letter-of-intent with Arkansas.

Smith, a 6-foot-6 player from St. Benedict's, averaged 23.3 points and 5.4 rebounds last year. He signed a letter-of-intent to North Carolina. Smith hopes to be chosen in the first round, but has no realistic expectation about where he might be selected.

Since Jefferson and Smith haven't signed with an agent, they have until June 17 to withdraw their names from consideration for the draft, which is June 24.

MAVS FINED: The Dallas Mavericks were fined $25,000 by the NBA on Monday for showing a pregame video that ridiculed members of the Sacramento Kings.

The Mavs showed the collection of vignettes, some of questionable taste, before Game 3 of their playoff series against the Kings on April 24 in Dallas.

The Kings won the first-round series in five games.

BOBCATS OFFICIAL: The Charlotte Bobcats officially joined the NBA on Monday after majority owner Bob Johnson made the final payment on the team's $300 million expansion fee.

The Bobcats become the league's 30th team and will begin play next season.
