A Spanish book department with more than 4,000 titles opened Friday at Sam Weller's Zion Bookstore in downtown Salt Lake City.
Dennis Evans, general manager of the bookstore at 254 S. Main, said it's important to meet the reading needs of the city's growing Spanish-speaking community.
"The availability of a broad range of books is critical to the intellectual and cultural growth of any member of our community regardless of language or age," Evans said.
The bookstore previously carried about 200 Spanish titles, manager Catherine Weller said. The bookstore also carries some literature in about 20 foreign languages "from Farsi to Dutch," she said.
Mayor Rocky Anderson called the Spanish book section "a wonderful new resource for the community." He said native Spanish speakers and those wishing to learn Spanish will both benefit equally from the variety of titles.
