Lee statue is ready to unveil — or not

But there are others, namely Anderson and many Lee descendants, who say it's time to forgive, and the statue, they say, may help people do that.

After all, some supporters of Lee say, the former LDS bishop and adopted son of Brigham Young wasn't the only person wearing a gun that day.

But there's more to this story that bothers Fancher, she said.

"I learned this statue was in the works in 2001, and then it seemed to go away because of the controversy," she said. "We've made so much progress, but then this reared its ugly head again."

City leaders did send a letter to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to ask if leaders perceived a problem with the statue, and they did not, Clove said.

Terry Fancher, president of the nonprofit Mountain Meadow Association, whose members come from both sides of the tragedy, said emotions are running high on all sides right now.
