Bonneville stations look strong in early estimates

A preview of the upcoming Winter Arbitron book shows that Bonneville International has four of the top 10 stations, including the top two.

For the second month of the quarter surveyed, KSFI ("FM-100") is on top for age 12-plus listeners, with an 8.8 percent audience share. Sister station KSL (AM-1160) is second at 7.5, and KUBL (FM-93.3) is third at a distant 5.4 percent.

Bonneville stations KQMB (nicknamed "Star 102.7") and KRSP (a k a "Arrow 103.5") are also in the top 10.

KUUU/KTCE ("U-92") is fourth at 4.2, followed by KXRK ("X-96") at 4.0

Rounding out the top 10 are: 6. (tie) KOSY and KQMB (3.9); 8. KRSP (3.7); 9. KBEE (3.6); and KSOP-FM (3.5).

Among company groupings, Bonneville is first with a 23.9 percent share of the age 12-plus listening market. Second is Clear Channel at 18.3, followed by Citadel at 14 percent, Millcreek at 10.6 percent and Simmons Media at 7.8 percent.

The complete quarterly ratings could change things. They are due out April 30.

RADIO HAPPENINGS — KUBL and "Johnson and Johnson" hosted an event April 15 where listeners threw pies at an IRS representative. At one point, 20 pies at once were being thrown. . .

KODJ will host its annual "Oldies Fest" on June 5 at Franklin Covey Field.

— "Love Songs" has returned on KSFI, weeknights, from 7 p.m. to midnight. Ceci Williams is the show's host and takes requests from listeners, as well as tells some Utah love stories.

"Paul Harvey" remains a popular syndicated program. Locally, it can be heard on KNRS (AM-570), weekdays at 7:30 a.m., 8:35 a.m. and 9:35 p.m. It also airs on Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. He is also heard on six other Utah radio stations.

KZHT was giving away rafting trips to the Grand Canyon this week.

KURR's morning team, "Dawn Patrol" (Mick and Earl), is on the road trying to visit 30 towns in 30 days. Photographs of their visits are online at: www.classicrockandroll995.com. The DJs also have some special regular features, like "Monday Morning Moron."

"The Radio From Hell Show" (Kerry, Bill and Gina) on KXRK has been talking a lot about the recent FCC crackdown on indecency. The DJs believe the issue is a First Amendment one and that other media could be in a similar situation next. Some listeners have complained the DJs spend too much time talking about this issue.
