DRAPER — Stephen Phillips' long legs give the Waterford striker an uncanny ability to dribble in tight spaces. That lengthy leg span was all that separated Waterford and Juan Diego Wednesday.

Four minutes into overtime, Phillips demonstrated his dribbling skills by dancing around several Juan Diego defenders at the edge of the penalty area. Just when it seemed his last touch got away from him, he lunged forward and toe-poked the overtime game-winner past Juan Diego's stunned keeper.

The golden goal capped a thrilling 2-1 win for Waterford, in a rivalry that is quickly becoming one of the best in the state.

"The move that Steve made before that shot was great," said Waterford coach Bob Capener.

With the victory, the defending 3A champion Ravens wrap up Region 14 play with an 8-1-1 record. Juan Diego, meanwhile, still has the inside track at the region crown with a 7-1-0 record and two winnable games remaining.

"We were both glad to have a game like this right at the end of the season," said Capener. "We wish we wouldn't have tied Rowland Hall, because this could've been for a region championship."

Waterford beat Juan Diego on the Soaring Eagle's home field last year to claim the state title. After Wednesday's win on the same field, Capener joked that his team feels right at home at Juan Diego.

Right from the opening whistle, Waterford established itself as the more hungry team. It created countless scoring chances, including eight corner kicks, but failed to punch one in.

At the half, Juan Diego coach Mark Drown challenged his team to play with some desire — something he felt they were severely lacking in the lethargic first half.

It took just seven minutes for that increased effort to pay off. Juan Padilla banged home a penalty kick after teammate Mike Breiling was knocked down in the box. It took Waterford just six minutes to equalize as Taylor Hyde unleashed an incredible 35-yard free kick into the back of the net.

The final 25 minutes of the second half was an up-and-down affair in which both teams created countless scoring chances. Juan Diego goalie Tony Speare preserved the victory with a breakaway save by Matt Ward in the 77th minute.

The celebration, however, was short-lived as Phillips scored quickly in overtime.
