OGDEN — Riverside Technology High School has announced that it is changing its name to DaVinci Academy of Science & The Arts.

The academy is a new high-tech charter school opening this fall in Ogden's new High-Tech Center, beginning with ninth and 10th grades.

Board president Eric Stroup said the old name was a source of confusion as people were under the impression that the school was located in Riverdale and restricted only to technology.

"In reality, (we) have a full curriculum stressing college preparation and we'll serve all of Weber County. Science and math are paramount, yes, but the arts and humanities make for a well-rounded person," said Stroup.

Research on the name began in March. Dozens of parents, students and professionals in the sciences were interviewed and almost universally chose the DaVinci name.

"(DaVinci) blurred the lines between science and other disciplines, intuitively seeing how everything was connected. Likewise, we want our students to recognize the hidden sciences in all subjects, yet always maintain a human perspective as well," said Stroup.

Public information meetings are being held throughout Weber County. Times and locations are posted on the school's new Web site at www.davinciacademy.org. Interested students may apply online or call 605-4483.
