• Depending on your soil and microclimate, many Dianthus self-seed readily, making even the annuals seem like perennials.

• Because Dianthus can withstand some cold, you can set them out at or just before the average last-frost date in your area.

• Never spray blooming fruit trees for insects. Insecticidal sprays kill the bees that are essential to pollinate the trees so the fruit will develop. Spray to control wormy apples in May; to prevent wormy cherries, spray in June.

• Utah State University Extension, the Utah Botanical Center and Utah House is sponsoring a class on "New Flower and Vegetable Varities" at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Utah Botanical Center, 920 S. 50 West, Kaysville. For registration, call 451-3403.
