"For us left behind, she gave an example of commitment and courage and love that should help us live stronger lives. And I hope that in some small way it helps soften the loss her immediate family must be feeling right now. Even though passing is only a short time before we are all reunited, it is still a difficult time for her close friends and family left behind." Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah

"As the campus community, we express our love, our respect and our sympathy to President Hinckley and the Hinckley family. We have been honored to have had Sister Hinckley on our campus many times. Each time we have been uplifted by her joyful spirit and by her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We join with all those worldwide who loved Sister Hinckley in expressing our sorrow at her passing." Brigham Young University President Cecil O. Samuelson

"My family has known (President Hinckley) for a long time. He has relied enormously upon his wife. It has been a wonderful relationship for an extended period of time. I'm sure she's in a happier place and maybe a little lonely there. My heart goes out to one of the kindest, sweetest men, who I know is a little lonely now. . . . We as a people will miss her very much." Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah

"She was a distinguished lady, a rather settled person, who I believe operated with a great deal of dignity. I believe we'll all share the grief of the family, and we'll certainly pray that they'll be comforted in the empty space that she leaves." The Rev. France Davis, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City

"Sister Hinckley was one of the most important adult women in my childhood. She taught me in Sunday School and in Mutual. I loved her very much because she was always warm and welcoming. I was probably not an easy child to teach, but she always seemed to care about me. I will miss her greatly and pray for her peace in God, now and always. She's always been so gracious to me, as has President Hinckley, and so I'm sad at her passing."Bishop Carolyn Tanner Irish, Episcopal bishop of Utah

"President and Mrs. Hinckley have been devoted spouses for many years, committed to each other, their family and this community as well as to the members of their faith, and that's been very admirable. It is with sadness that we learn of Mrs. Hinckley's death, and we offer our condolences to President Hinckley, his family and members of the LDS community."Monsignor Terrence Fitzgerald, Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City

"There is something about being a couple and having a partner, for such a long time, that it's almost like losing a part of yourself. She's been his helpmate and has been there to allow him to lead the church in a way that has made her life significant, even if she had never done anything else. When you're half of a duet, you have a kind of confidence to reach out that's difficult when that strength is not there. She will be greatly missed." Jan Shipps, scholar of Mormonism

"We are very sorry. We want to share the grief; it is really shocking news for us. We all want to share and say sorry to her family and all of the Mormon brothers and sisters." Nadeem Ahmed, Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake board member and past president and board of trustees chairman
