A woman accused of kidnapping a 3-day-old baby from LDS Hospital Tuesday has been charged.

According to documents filed in 3rd District Court Friday, Elizabeth Marie Alarid, 39, was wearing hospital scrubs when she took the baby from a mother after claiming she was going to circumcize the infant. Although she was stopped at one point by a floor superviser, Alarid was able to leave the hospital with the baby.

A hospital security guard eventually found Alarid at a nearby grocery store, according to the charges, where she was held until police arrived. In a bag carried by Alarid police found information about the baby, formula, clothes and a Wendover casino swipe card which she had worn in the hospital as an identification badge.

Detectives said Alarid told them she had taken the baby because she had lost a fetus two months earlier and did not want to tell her family. She is charged with one count of child kidnapping, a first-degree felony punishable by five years to life in prison.
