The Cavani String Quartet returns to Utah this week with concerts in Provo and Logan.

The group — with Annie Fullard and Mari Sato on violins; Kirsten Docter, viola; and Merry Peckham, cello — will play two concerts:

— Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., Brigham Young University's Madsen Recital Hall; tickets are $9 for general admission and $6 for students (801-378-4322).

— Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Eccles Conference Center Auditorium, Utah State University; tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students (435-797-3000).

The program for both concerts will be the same: Haydn's Divertimento for Solo Viola, in William Primrose's arrangement, Bartok's String Quartet No. 6 and Dvorak's String Quartet in F major, op. 96, "American."

In addition to the Logan concert, the Cavani will be in residence at USU Wednesday-Saturday, offering master classes and workshops. (Anne Francis, cellist with the Fry St. Quartet, USU's quartet-in-residence, is a former student at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where the Cavani has been in residence since 1988.)

The Cavani was formed in 1984 and has been one of America's most sought-after quartets since winning the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award. The ensemble has performed throughout Europe and the United States, with concerts in Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Recently, the foursome played Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet with violinist Itzhak Perlman and pianist Rohan DeSilva at the Perlman Music Program on Shelter Island, N.Y.
