Tennessee beats DePaul, earns a spot in Sweet 16

Tennessee cruised into the NCAA's round of 16 for the 23rd straight year with a 79-59 victory over De-Paul on Monday night in the Midwest Regional in Tallahassee, Fla.

Shanna Zolman scored 18 points in the first half for the top-seeded Lady Vols (28-3), who were up by as many as 27 before halftime.

Tennessee next plays Baylor in Norman, Okla., on Sunday.

The ninth-seeded Blue Demons (23-7) struggled when leading scorer Khara Smith got into early foul trouble.

Tennessee coach Pat Summitt now has 82 NCAA tournament wins among her 849 career victories, second only to Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp among college basketball coaches.

BAYLOR 91, FLORIDA 76: At Albuquerque, N.M., Sophia Young scored 17 of her 23 points in the first half and fourth-seeded Baylor (26-8) advanced to the round of 16 for the first time in school history.

With Florida's leading scorer and rebounder, Vanessa Hayden, on the bench for the last 14 1/2 minutes of the first half with two fouls, Baylor used a 16-2 run to take a 46-32 lead at halftime.

Bernice Mosby led the fifth-seeded Gators (19-11) with 16 points.

VANDERBILT 60, CHATTANOOGA 44: At Chattanooga, Tenn., Carla Thomas had 15 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks for the second-seeded Commodores (26-7), who advanced to the round of 16 for the 11th time. They will face either Stanford or Oklahoma.

Vanderbilt won its 10th game in a row by ending the nation's longest winning streak.

Chattanooga (29-3), playing on its home court as a No. 10 seed, extended its streak to 27 with a 74-69 victory over No. 7 seed Rutgers in the first round.

It was the first win in the NCAA tournament for the Lady Mocs, who have won the Southern Conference tournament four straight years.

MIDEAST REGIONAL

BOSTON COLLEGE 63, OHIO STATE 48: At Columbus, Ohio, Amber Jacobs scored 17 points and Boston College held Ohio State scoreless for eight minutes of the second half.

The third-seeded Eagles (27-6) advanced to play either Minnesota or Kansas State in the regional semifinals Sunday in Norfolk, Va.

Kathrin Ress added 16 points and Jessalyn Deveny had 15 for the Eagles, who reached the round of 16 for the second year in a row.

Brandie Hoskins scored 16 points for the sixth-seeded Buckeyes (21-10), who were playing on their own campus.

WEST REGIONAL

GEORGIA 85, TCU 71: At Philadelphia, Christi Thomas had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Jessica Pierce added 18 points for Georgia.

The third-seeded Bulldogs (24-9) advanced to the round of 16 for the 14th time in 21 NCAA tournament appearances. Georgia will face Villanova or Purdue in Seattle.

TCU (25-7) was denied a shot at setting a school record for wins in a season and lost in the second round for the fourth straight year. Sandora Irvin led the sixth-seeded Lady Frogs with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Tiffany Evans had 22 points.
