SANDY Police apprehended two men in a stolen vehicle who led officers on a six-minute chase, crashed into a patrol car while trying to get away and then wound up stranded in a police station parking lot with a blown tire.
It all started Monday at 6:20 p.m. when an off-duty Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy working security at the Deseret Industries, 727 E. 9400 South, ran the plate of a suspicious vehicle.
The car came back stolen, Sandy Police Sgt. Bill O'Neal said.
The officer activated the lights in his unmarked vehicle. The driver briefly fled, stopped and then fled again as the off-duty officer waited for backup, O'Neal said.
Sandy police then joined the deputy in a pursuit through residential streets of up to 50 mph. Although the deputy cornered the stolen vehicle in a cul-de-sac, the driver hit the deputy's car and drove away, O'Neal said. Both vehicles received minor damage.
The chase ended at 10000 S. Centennial Parkway, in front of the police department, when the vehicle's tires blew after hitting a concrete island. Although the driver tried to get away on foot, he was caught. His passenger remained in the car.
O'Neal said the driver was treated at Alta View Hospital for treatment of minor scratches and faces multiple charges.
