WASHINGTON Emma Smith of Box Elder High School has been named a recipient of the prestigious 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The award was announced by Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, himself a former teacher at Box Elder High and 30-year veteran educator. "At least one of my own kids has been in her class, so I know she is a credit to Utah and our community, not to mention a credit to all the hardworking men and women who support the education of America's children."
The award was established in 1983 to recognize outstanding science and mathematics in each state and the four U.S. jurisdictions. It is recognized as the nation's highest commendation for elementary and secondary math and science teachers.
Each winner received a $10,000 grant for their school and trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the presentation ceremony and week of activities.
