Doug Robinson must have intended to show the injustice of the law and the system when he wrote his column on Feb. 24 concerning "David Jones" (not his real name). Mr. Jones was arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law when he took his gun into the airport.
While I believe Mr. Jones is indeed a model citizen, I came to a different conclusion than Doug did. I think he got off easy with a simple fine and 90 days in jail, especially since he didn't serve the time and only paid $250.
Now before all you concealed-gun-permit holders stop reading and run to your word processors, hear my reasoning.
In the past year or so, two young women I personally know lost their lives. One was to be married the next month; the other was close to her high school graduation. Both died because of issues regarding gun safety and lapses of judgment.
Poor judgment and forgetfulness can lead to tragedy in a split second. When David Jones became an "absent-minded idiot" (his words, not mine) and left his gun in a backpack instead of locking it up, he got off lucky.
While it is true that guns don't kill people, people kill people, it is also true that careless people with guns kill people, people with poor judgment with guns kill people, and even absent-minded idiots with guns kill people.
