ROSE MOVIE: Pete Rose will be the subject of an ESPN movie beginning production this spring.

"Hustle" will premiere on Sept. 25, ESPN executive vice president Mark Shapiro announced Tuesday. The two-hour movie will focus on events in Rose's life and baseball career in the mid- to late 1980s, including the lifetime ban he agreed to following an investigation of gambling — a suspension that has kept the career hits leader off the Hall of Fame ballot.

RYAN TO ADVISE ASTROS: Fifteen years after he left, Nolan Ryan returned to the Houston Astros on Tuesday.

The Hall of Famer, who holds the record for no-hitters (seven) and strikeouts (5,714), signed a five-year personal services contract.

He pitched for Houston from 1980-88, then spent his last five seasons with the Texas Rangers. His 10-year personal services contract with the Rangers ended earlier this month.

"In my mind, I hoped to be involved with the organization after my playing days were over," he said. "It's kind of special to be standing here today. I just had kind of a 15-year detour there that I hadn't anticipated."

Astros owner Drayton McLane said Ryan will work in all phases of the organization, including on-field instruction.

CANSECO TO TRY OUT: Jose Canseco plans to try out for the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2 1/2 years after his last appearance in the major leagues.

The six-time All-Star will attend the Los Angeles Dodgers' open tryout on March 1.

"Canseco's people called us," Matt Slater, the Dodgers' director of professional scouting, said Tuesday. "He's welcome to come."

Canseco last played in the majors in 2001 when he hit .258 with 16 homers for the Chicago White Sox.

ACC WINS AGAIN: The Atlantic Coast Conference defeated the Big East in court for the third time in four months.

A Connecticut judge has dismissed all claims against the ACC, its commissioner and officers in a lawsuit filed by four Big East schools over the ACC's expansion. A lawyer for the Big East schools said there will be an appeal.

The expansion sparked a major makeover of several conferences as many schools forged new affiliations.
