Having been the chairman of the search committee that selected Pavel Kogan as the principal guest conductor of the Utah Symphony, I am writing this letter because of the article appearing in the Deseret Morning News Feb. 16. I felt that it did not reflect the splendid performances we have received from the symphony under Kogan's baton.
I must say how thrilled I have been with his work in this position. He has been musically stimulating to both orchestra members and the audience and has lived up to my highest expectations.
I have also had the unique opportunity of hearing him conduct his outstanding Moscow State Symphony for two full seasons in the great Tchaikovsky Hall of the Moscow Conservatory to sold out audiences. It was most appropriate that he be given the Governor's Mansion Artist Award Feb. 5 for enhancing Utah's musical scene.
