About 25 people evacuated from an apartment building during a two-alarm fire early Tuesday were expected to be back in their homes by today.
Salt Lake City firefighters were called at 12:18 a.m. to a three-story building near 300 East and 200 South. The first arriving units saw smoke billowing from the attic.
A second alarm was called because of the building's size and the evacuations, Salt Lake City Fire spokesman Dennis McKone said.
The evacuated residents wearing bathrobes and wrapped in blankets watched the fire from across the street.
"We just grabbed a jacket," said Kristen Lemon, who lives in a basement apartment.
Firefighters battled the blaze inside the building and on its roof. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes, McKone said.
Damage was estimated at $100,000. The cause was still under investigation Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Cross provided shelter for the displaced residents Tuesday.
