Properly pruned trees hold up better to snow

Well-pruned and correctly trained trees are not as prone to storm damage as those that grow incorrectly. Here are some tips:

• Remove weakened branches or potential defects before they become problematic.

• Separate branches so that they do not all come out at the same point on the trunk.

• Remove dead, broken or diseased branches promptly.

• When possible, select branches that make a wide angle with the trunk. Narrow branch angles are prone to break down in the snow.

• Always prune to the branch bark ridge. This is the thickened area around the base of the branch where it attaches to the tree.

• Avoid flush cuts, as they open up more tree tissue for decay and remove the tissue that closes the wound.

• Don't bother with tree paints or other wound dressings. They aren't needed.
